Rødhåd has been socialized by Berlin’s looptechno nights and always finds the perfect balance of timeless techno to lift the dancefloor higher and higher. His style is always deep, powerful and melancholic – from dub to techno and back to house.

At the the end of the 1990s Rødhåd laid the groundwork for his DJ-career. He organised small open-air-parties in the outskirts of Berlin just for the fun of it. The word spread quickly far beyond Berlin’s and Germany’s borders about the new kid on the block. His specific style, consisting of Dub-Techno mixed with percussive grooves and his timeless, perfect mixing technique garnered him widespread recognition.

In 2009, he launched his own regular club night with himself as resident: DYSTOPIAN. Such legendary locations as the Arena Club, the Tape Club or Horst Krzbrg in Berlin have been witness to these intense club nights.

Around 2010, the famous Berlin club Berghain recognised Rødhåds craft. His sound and his style of mixing fit neatly to the philosophy of this place, and he started DJing there regularly. From then on he had gigs in places all over Europe, such as Trouw (Amsterdam), Concrete (Paris), Rex (Paris), Lux (Lisbon), Fuse (Brussels) and major scene events such as Awakenings, Weather Festival or Melt Festival.

In 2012, he released his first record on his label DYSTOPIAN. Rødhåd’s tracks immediately received praise by Robert Hood, Jeff Mills, Marcel Dettmann, Ben Klock, Luke Slater, Laurent Garnier, Sven Väth, Dave Clarke. Also labels such as Token, CLR & Cocoon became aware of the young producer.

He caught his big break in the same year, as he was featured and interviewed as “Break Through Artist Of The Year” on the paramount website for electronic music, www.residentadvisor.net. Tours in Japan, Australia and international bookings every weekend followed.

Subversive is very excited to host Rodhad’s Vancouver debut. We know you will DANCE!

The Bunker – Ghostly – Brooklyn, NY

Mike Servito is from a very special yet temporary and partially lost fertile crescent of techno / house / party DJing. It was a time when raves were still a fresh idea, almost felt like a revolution, and DJs like Claude Young, D Wynn, Derrick Carter and Mike Huckaby were informing an upcoming generation. If you look directly to that inspired generation you will find the lost threads of Detroit Techno, House and beyond, you will find a group of DJs with insanely deep mixing skills, the ability to rock almost any kind of party with an improvisational approach that is so skilled it makes everything seem so well thought out that even they don’t know where their set will go. But, it will take you there! In the future, this special generation of deep midwest mixers will be remembered and revered as the wizards they are, long after the trendy players have lost their luster.

Detroit never forgot about Mike Servito, his upfront dirty deep and bitchy taste has had an impact on Detroit nightlife for over a decade. From debuting in 1995 at Dat’s Poorboy parties, to being a resident at blackbx and Ghostly’s Untitled (along with Derek Plaslaiko, Tadd Mullinix, Matthew Dear, and Ryan Elliott), contributing to the bizarrely popular, wild and free Dorkwave, and progressing that concept into Sass (the hippest queer party in Detroit at the time), to blowing minds at Interdimensional Transmissions’ No Way Back parties, Servito has made his impression. Moving to Brooklyn, Detroit’s loss has been their gain, as he has found a proper home with a new residency at the Bunker, and plays some of the wildest parties the world over!

These two do have bio’s but… need no introduction… if you have heard them play, you know what we are talking about! (If not THIS is your chance to get to know!) Always a proper beat to move your feat! and together they are dynamite!

ESB (deepen sound – Heart to Heart)
ESB (electricsound broadcast) is a music lover and analog fanatic. His personal take on deep house music comes from a history of Vancouver underground culture in the 90s as a Dj, playing in a disco band, hosting space-music jams, reappropriating obsolete recording equipment, and deep respect of synthesizers and the musicians that were masters of them. His own recordings are hands-on productions with thick analog groove and multi-layered sounds. A long time passion for all things synth, and a whole lot of house music influence he lays down a range of disco, house and tech funk with a bit of sideways feel to keep you guessing. This music will make you dance!

Blasting onto the Seattle scene with an army of melodies and a head full of funk, Miss Shelrawka (Miss-Shel-RAW-ka) is a welcome transplant from NYC to the West. She’s been lighting dance floors on fire from the Big Apple to the City by the Bay.

She owns a unique style of funky Minimal Techno, Techno, Tech House and House; influenced by everything from indie, punk and 80’s electro to tribal rhythms and classic soul. No matter what, the bass-lines will be saturated with techness and funk!

Catch this fresh new face on her way up as she stays busy bringing an original vibe to the underground front lines.

Nancy Dru (Subversive, Bonz.ai)

Jen P grew up in a large suburb of Vancouver, listening her dad’s strange records, playing goofy melodies on her bontempi, trying to learn guitar but finding reel to reel loops much more appealing. As a result, she has always been obsessed with the stranger end of electronic music.

In 1997 she started online radio stations geekmusic and geekmusic 2, playing IDM of the golden era. She also began producing her own IDM music at this time as The Square Root of Evil, and now has numerous releases under her belt, including two EPs, “Chirping Data” and “Killerbytes”. As well, she has played countless live shows around the world as a producer, including festivals such as Soundwave, Mutek, and Communikey, and alongside such artists as Plaid, Venetian Snares, Books on Tape, FFF, Cursor Miner, and Captain Ahab.

Tastes change, helped by a healthy dose of music festivals such as New Forms, Decibel and Mutek. Gradually Jen found herself enjoying the four on the floor sounds that she had previously brushed off (the 303s didn’t hurt either). In 2011 she helped to start an idm/techno bi-weekly in Vancouver- “Bonz.ai”- as a resident DJ (as Nancy Dru), using her experience as a producer to craft danceable sets with some less predictable twists and turns. In 2013 she became part of Vancouver Subversive crew, and has shared the stage with Alland Byallo (Thoughtless), Ryan Elliot (Osgut Ton), Shed (Monkeytown, Delsin), Kangding Ray (Raster Noton, Stroboscopic Artefacts), and more- playing deep & dark techno sounds that appeal to the brain as well as the body.

A portion of the proceeds from this event will go to A Loving Spoonful (http://www.alovingspoonful.org/) and Girls Rock Camp Vancouver (http://girlsrockcampvancouver.ca/)

Subversive and Body Politic present: KANGDING RAY

Kanding ray
Kangding Ray – Live Audio Visual Performance
[raster-noton & stroboscopic artefacts]

Thegn [live]
KAFKA [live]
Nancy Dru [dj set]

Kangding Ray’s (David Letellier) music reflects his wide musical background, and a particular way of merging beats and atmospheric soundscapes into slowly evolving compositions. KR Combines machines with real instruments in a subtle and rhythmic suite, integrating noises, walls of distortion, massive bass lines, voices and field recordings, blending techno grooves with dark textures, always on the edge between experimental and club culture.

Since his debut release on raster-noton in 2006, Kangding Ray has undergone a continuous transformation of his sound, led by a rare attention to sound texture and a constant avant-gardist attitude. From the filigrane digital landscapes of his debuts to the massive panoramic compositions of his last releases, Kangding Ray managed to establish himself as one of the most forward-thinking producers of his time, and one which has helped build and enrich the sound of the prestigious raster-noton label.

After more than a two and a half year absence from Canada and the U.S., Kangding Ray is bringing the debut North American performance of his new album, Solens Arc, to Vancouver – almost a week before his show at Mutek15 in Montreal. Performing live right on the floor, with hardware synths, drum machines and visual projections, this show will be not unlike the Boiler Room performances he is renowned for.

JASON KENDIG (Honey Soundsystem / San Francisco)

Subversive Presents:
Jason Kendig (Honey Soundsystem / San Francisco)
Caleb Fox

Jason Kendig obtained his first record player at age 5, his first synthesizer at age 7 and started buying dance records in Detroit in the early ‘90s. Since then, he has graduated to DJ as his record collection of House, Techno, Disco, Italo and beyond continues to crowd his living space. Currently living in San Francisco, he is a member of the Honey Soundsystem collective, a group of gay DJ’s and producers who focus on raising the bar on dance music ever higher with their weekly party and specially curated one off events. As a producer, he focuses on analog synthesis and drum machines, pushing the vintage sound forward as he amasses and explores instruments with a ‘hands-on’ approach. His physical approach in the studio translates to deeply physical sounds on the dancefloor. His tracks and remixes have been released on Honey Soundsystem’s home label HNYTRX, MR. INTL Records, Ecstasy Records and 3rd Strike Records

We at Subversive love djs who shun trends and fads and that are so in tune with their own mind body and soul, that you FEEL the imprint of their soundscapes deeply. It’s a powerful experience to be moved by music that has caught the attention of a great selector. A Jason Kendig set is an incredible, immersive experience. It connects mind, body and soul. We can pretty much assure that your smiles will come easily, your cares will drop away, and that you will shake what your mama gave you! :)

Bring your smiles and your dancing feet! We are lovers of music who welcome all people, regardless of creed, race or sexual orientation. Be yourself whatever that may be!
Come celebrate music, dance and expression!

SHED [live] (Monkeytown, Ostgut Ton, 50 Weapons, Equalized)

2014-04-05-Subversive_SHED2Saturday April 5, 2014

Subversive Presents:
SHED [live]
(Monkeytown, Ostgut Ton, 50 Weapons, Equalized)

Over the years, many artists have been tagged as shape-shifters, but few have taken it as far as Rene Pawlowitz. Known primarily as Shed,  the German producer has been blurring the lines between techno, house, and dubby exploration for over a decade.A fixture in Berlin’s Hard Wax universe, the German producer is quick with the anonymous white label action on his own outfits like Wax, Equalized or the more designed but still disguised Power House label that feature breakbeat rave, gutter house and rocket techno. As much as these releases are surprising and capturing, it’s his oldest and most popular pseudonym Shed that is the root of his sound. Whether on his own imprint Soloaction, on Berghain’s Ostgut Ton or more recently on Modeselektor’s 50Weapons, Shed unifies the scientific approach that is part of Berlin’s techno history with the British hardcore continuum and an eccentric unique edge that is personally his. Whoever says that techno has reached the end of its days, has never heard of Shed.

Subversive is proud to present Shed live in a rare North American performance.

Subversive_TRAXXTraxx does not define himself as a DJ or a Producer
but an artist of sound.
A man who blurs the lines between genres
Letting himself be taken by rhythms and melodies.

Pleasantly surprising
Ranging from avant –garde eclectic sounds to unending old school tracks.

This is the spirit behind Nation: the platform he created in 2007 to gather creators (JTC, D’Marc Cantu,Beau Wanzer,Nancy Fortune,Naughty Wood…) who, like him, push the “jakbeat” sound to places where anything is possible

With a passion so intense that it overcomes genre divides
To weave an altogether original, exciting, and multi-textured musical fabric
Enveloping both the avid clubber and the home listener, as well as everyone in between.

musicians paint their pictures on silence”

If you want to hear what the future, and past, of house and techno sounds like, you’d do worse than to check out a set by Carlos Souffront. There’s a certain paradoxical nature to the genres’ futurism – which is why he’s committed to bringing out the psychedelia and funk of classic records in a new way. Now based in San Francisco, where he’s known for various DJ residencies as well as for co-hosting Crush Collision, Souffront is much loved in his native Detroit, a city where you really have to pay your dues to gain a rep as a DJ’s DJ. Sometimes referred to as the librarian of techno… his collection of rare early Detroit techno and acid is renown. Wear your dancing shoes!

Rennie Foster has been a well respected producer and DJ in the Canadian music community since he was just a teenager. Recently returning from Tokyo’s techno oriented club scene, where he’s resided since 2004, Rennie has played venues all over North America, Europe and Asia holding his own alongside a diverse range of top players from Frankie Knuckles to Daniel Bell to Grandmaster Flash to name but a few. Rennie’s keen ear for authentic and original music and his remarkable skills on the decks… teases out every bit of amazing in the grooves. Expect to Dance!

Caleb Fox plays dope music.  His ear for exquisite tracks of rare beauty (and for superior sound systems!) are a highlight of the Vancouver underground.  Subversive is honoured to have him as such a key member of our crew!  His passion defines the quality of our events.  This is the very best of the good stuff!  We know your dancing feet will agree.

If you were lucky enough to catch Austin Phillips recent set opening for Cio D’Or then you KNOW why we love this man. Austin has an incredible collection of exquisite vinyl which he puts to good use as he conjures up audible emotion that thrills and moves you. An Austin Phillips set is one incredible journey.

Happy New Year!

Cio d’Or (Prologue / Time to Express)

Open Studios,

Vancouver, Canada

Friday Dec 6, 2013

Cio D´Or moves. Filtering to track down deep and authentic musical developments amongst the mass of records without forgetting the gems of the past. Her dj sets arise from an idea, which she develops and threads through her set. Emotional, extravagant and charismatic. Cio´s style is more techno than house, ranges from maximal to minimal. It has depth and is filled with bass, is often surprising and propelling, though still clear. Music, in the form of dance and rhythmic instruments, moved Cio D´Or right from the start. Her first steps onto the stage were at 17, playing congas in a 7-person jazz band. Her staged dance choreographies were inspired by the likes of Brian Eno and David Byrne. Her life began to revolve around the exploration of music. Her love for sound intensified and since then no day has passed without music. Tobi Neumann heard Cio D´Or in a bar in Munich and booked her straight away for “Flokati”. Gigs at diverse parties and clubs followed. As support dj for Richard Bartz and his “Kurbel” tour, Cio D´Or joined the professional league, after which her residency in the legendary Munich club “Ultraschall” began. She started to run her own night “Nachtwind” in “Woandersclub” and “Harry Klein”. From this time, Cio established herself consistently on national and international floors with her emotive, almost magical sets. She doesn´t play music, she lives it.

Qu personally describes his style of playing as “A dancer’s energy and mood presentation”

FredPSteveS_11x17“Our music is everything. Our music has no true definition other than its ability to bring us together, to unify such diverse people into one true vibe and one global meaning… This movement is often a catalyst to people becoming enriched with a wide array of expression and freedom. By going out and celebrating our lives through dance and social interaction, we break the shackles and the oppression of our governments and cleanse ourselves of the corrupt messages that are constantly trying to brainwash each and every one of us… Be true, be unified and stand up against the powers that be. Our parties are renegade, our world is mystical…”
