Subversive, Subspec, and The Fox Cabaret are proud to present an Official Movement Electronic Music Festival pre-
party featuring Detroit Underground and Blank Code artist ANNIE HALL.

DJ and producer Annie Hall has been steadily carving a name for herself as an artist who delivers diverse, solid sets and music. Born and raised in Spain, Annie started her life as a DJ in 2003 and began producing in 2005. She has released on labels such as Blank Code, Flash Recordings, Semantica Records, Minnuendo, D1 Recordings and Detroit Underground Recordings. With an eclectic taste in music, Annie creates music across the electronic spectrum, from tracks that are experimental – taking the listener on a more complex journey – to tracks that drive the dance floor.

Annie now calls the motor city’s “southside” (Windsor, Ontario) home, and has become an integral part of the Detroit music community. Her DJ sets draw inspiration from the complex landscapes of ruin and hope that characterize the Motor City. Tinged with darkness but with a strong Detroit Techno / high tech soul feeling and a dynamic vibe.

Annie’s skills have been showcased at Sonar Festival, Detroit Movement Festival and Dommune in Tokyo, among others.

JGarrett relocated from Metro Detroit to Vancouver in 2000. but never forgot his roots in the legendary and influential warehouses of that city. Join us for a 2-room party with Downwards label head Regis, Minimal Wave founder Veronica Vasicka, and a varied host of special local talent.

In the Cabaret:

Karl O’Connor is most certainly Regis and it is also highly probable that he propagates other pseudonyms. This has only added to the greater mythology surrounding the influential Downwards label that he has run with fellow art terrorist Peter Sutton (Female) since 1993. Unconventional and single-minded to say the least (what label can boast a back catalogue free of the industry standard cash cow remix) by decentralising the focus on the DJ/producer personality, he remains one of the more highly regarded creative forces within the British techno/electronic scene. Degenerate art indeed.

Veronica Vasicka
Founded by DJ and East Village Radio host Veronica Vasicka in 2005, New York-based label Minimal Wave has done the invaluable work of historical recovery, unearthing an entire subgenre for a new generation. Emerging from the brief postpunk movement of the late 1970s and early 1980s, and created by like-minded musicians in home studios scattered across Europe, Minimal Wave found the impulses of the early avant-gardes reanimated with help of analog synths. Along with the techno-leaning offshoot Cititrax, Vasicka has helped to generate a network for minimal and synth wave enthusiasts and promote electronic music via an online archive and high-quality vinyl releases.

Scott W.
Local legend of many talents, Scott W. is a mainstay in Vancouver’s underground music scene, and one of the best music selectors our city has to offer.

Subversive presents: Joey Anderson

JAY TRIPWIRE (Tonality, Poker Flat)
CALEB FOX (Subversive, Royal City)

JOEY ANDERSON (Dekmantel, Inimeg Recordings, Strength Music)

Hoboken, New Jersey native Joey Anderson launched his label Inimeg Recordings in early 2011. His first release on the label Organisms, featuring longtime comrade DJ Qu garnered a welcoming response from media outlets across the globe including RA and Concepto Radio. Anderson’s previously released tracks Dive Deep, Thee Analysis and Oval alongside his Exchange Place crew ignited an interest that is continuing to burgeon. With deep roots in the underground House Music scene of New York City as a masterful dancer, Joey Anderson’s evolution to producer, DJ and label owner were almost inevitable. His latest release We Are Not Alone with industry fav Jus-ED is a strong cohesive follow up to his premiere release. Moody vibes juxtaposing intergalactic intonations mixed with deep rhythmic consciousness, encompass Anderson’s sound.

Anderson’s recent sets at Dekmantel festival, Boiler Room and the highly coveted Free Rotation festival in London, won him widespread critical praise. With a steady stream of dark, shadowy and deep techno and house EPs on labels like Latency, Inimeg and Syncrophone, and Dekmantel, his studio work and collaborations are forging his signature soundscape. This is music for the mind, body, and soul. and you will DANCE!

JAY TRIPWIRE (Tonality, Poker Flat)

Always sitting slightly off-centre, Jay Tripwire is an artist that walks the line as industry staple and ever changing innovator, releasing one standout release after another. His signature fusion of deep Detroit textures and intricate rhythms has led a career spanning two decades, with over 200 releases and four full length albums. He remains one of the most prolific artists around, with 18 EP’s and a whole host of remixes for labels including Tonality, Pokerflat, 1Trax, Baker Street, Deep Data, SOCO Audio and System.
Detroit inspired textures to modern European house and tech house fusions, blurring genrefication. This follows releases on the label under his 8Channels name – a project that melds basic channel, soul and dub into a new hybrid soundscape of techno, deep house and dub. The moniker also appears on other highly regarded labels such as Ransom Note, Conya, NRK, Cinematic and Hallucination.
Whilst the term ‘legendary’ is often bandied about with little thought, in Jay’s case we could say just that – his personal arsenal of re-edits and comfort in arranging extended DJ sets lasting eight hours or more certainly demonstrates a talent that deviates from standard fare. Jay also still supports, buys and plays vinyl, and actively seeks out records to play at gigs, when Tripwire is on the decks he plays a vinyl CD set that contains no laptop djing. Jay’s work has been featured on numerous compilations, notably from Cocoon, Fabric, Renaissance, Journeys by DJ, Ultra & Bedrock, and is supported by a diverse spectrum of dance culture from house luminaries such as Doc Martin and Kerri Chandler to techno legends Steve Bug and Laurent Garnier. Instrumental in the formation of the Subversive crew, and skilled at moving dancefloors around the world, we are honoured have him play for us.

CALEB FOX (Subversive, Royal City)
Caleb Fox plays dope music. You may have been lucky enough to catch him behind the decks deep in the Vancouver underground. If so, you will have heard his mad skillz and exquisite selections. If not… this is your chance! Come early. Have a beverage, and dance like you own the floor!

Subversive presents: Matrixxman

Resurgent Techno Atavism

In the Cartesian view of identity, the body is a container for our mind, personality and ultimately our soul. But what happens when technology allows us to transcend the limitations of physical reality as we know it? In a post-corporeal life, our bodies may no longer be confined to the rather cumbersome form of a human but instead a vast digital network. Matrixxman happens to be a proponent of this possibility. When he is not preoccupied envisioning the emergence of myriad artificial intelligence entities and endless virtual worlds within worlds, he also enjoys composing music. The essence of which is crafting new interpretations of something straddling the grey area between classic Chicago house and Detroit techno. “Resurgent techno atavism” as he prefers to call it.

In 2013, Matrixxman’s debut EP “The XX Files” received critical acclaim, garnering praise from the likes of The Fader, Pitchfork, XLR8R and Fact Magazine. His relentless rhythm tracks like “Protocol” have been supported and played by a who’s who of dope underground elite including Levon Vincent, Len Faki, Richie Hawtin, Jeff Mills, San Soda, Boddika, Pfirter, etc. Meanwhile on the house side of things, various tunes of his have been rinsed by tastemakers such as Larry Heard, Joey Anderson, DVS1, HNNY, Huerco S and Seth Troxler, to name a few. Together with comrade Vin Sol, he runs the label Soo Wavey based out of San Francisco

Subversive is proud to bring the fresh sounds of Matrixxman to our favourite people! YOU!

With a stellar line-up that includes two of Vancouver’s own
underground legends (Max Ulis and Nancy Dru) you had best wear your dancing shoes! This is going to be all kinds of fun!

Subversive presents: Daniel Bell (Accelerate, Detroit)

Austin Phillips

visuals by: Pixelwrangler

The Subversive crew is honoured to welcome a true musical hero of ours back to Vancouver! The incomparable Daniel Bell! Absorbing influences of Chicago and avant garde minimalism Daniel Bell took it upon himself to create a sound that changed the course of electronic music. A reaction to the rave music of the time, where over the top stage shows and style had started to reign over substance, Bell looked back to the finer elements in sound and composition to produce what became to be known as, minimal techno. For some the phrase is a pair of dirty words, but tune in to the work he released under the DBX moniker and you’ll be hip to what the true sound of the genre was formed on; a solid, maddening level of groove.

Since his early days as a producer and part of the burgeoning empire of Hawtin’s Plus 8 label, Bell has gone on to play roles both on and off stage. Whether that was from his studio, imparting a new sound on the techno world with 1994’s ‘Losing Control’ or from his business role, behind the formation of some of the most influential labels in electronic music’s history. With both Shake’s Frictional and Dopplereffekt’s Dataphysix imprints – Bell sent shockwaves through the system and he’s been at the heart of some of the most exciting and influential music in electronic history.

ABDULLA RASHIM (Prologue, Northern Electronics)
Submerged in both rhythm and mystery, Abdulla Rashim’s shadowy aesthetic floats in balance with his uncompromising work. Wholly dedicated to his ideas and sound, Rashim’s quest for renewal and the importance of his craft has reflected well both internationally and locally, where he is praised alike. A listening ear and pure emotion is what his rhythms demand and what keeps him on top of his mission.

For Abdulla Rashim electronic music is not just a fashionable pursuit. On Abdulla Rahim Records, Prologue and his new label Northern Electronics,
he floats out earthy psychedelia with a sense of wonder and weirdness in every crevasse that’s manna to an audience starved for such individuality in techno.

Myte loves music. A classically trained pianist, her love of the dance and fun led her early and often to the turntables to explore a whole different world of sound. Myte’s keen ear for exquisite grooves and a reverence for both the sound’s roots and its evolution, soon found her spinning the finest of house and techno in front of happy revelers. Her name became synonymous with amazing music at Vancouver’s best underground club nights, outdoor festivals, and intimate after-hours.

For several years now, Myte has also been an integral part of Vancouver’s celebrated Subversive crew, playing alongside such greats as DVS1, Marcel Fengler, Stacey Pullen, Mike Parker, Rolando, Peter Van Hoesen, and Dj Qu among others. Each Myte set is a beautiful journey through sounds. Sometimes mystical and deep, sometimes pounding and cathartic, but always with an artful groove; the soul of the sound. She plays what moves her and it is this passion that is contagious.

The audible emotion that Austin creates behind the decks and the clever creations he devises in his studio reflect his inner musical guru. Setting the soundscape of many of Subversive’s events…playing alongside such greats as Shed, Cio D’Or, DVS1, Peter Van Hoesen, and Eddie Richards… Vancouver’s underground has come to love Austin… because… well… Austin knows his shit! If you do too… and love to dance.. you must check! ; )

DASHA RUSH (Fullpanda, Berlin, DE)

Dasha Rush is a Russian born, citizen of the world. She combines her activities as a techno producer with her dj performances as well as multi-artistic collaborations alongside artists and dancers. Dasha Rush conjures up a mixture of rare synthesized sounds, techno, and electronic experimentation. While all of her work is rooted in underground avant-garde art movements from the early 20th century to this day, Dasha likes to push the boundaries of contemporary music and dance, assembling sounds into deep, slightly dark, intense and emotional artistic expression. In her strange and twisted world the machines are the protagonists of a neo-romanticism, weaved with human dreams. The soundscapes you will hear on this night, will hit you; mind, body and soul.

THE AUTOMATIC MESSAGE (from 0-1, Unoiki, Kalimari)

The Automatic Message have built a strong portfolio of abstract, dark and tension-building audiovisuals together producing avant-guard, off-kilter techno. CLR label boss Chris Liebing brought them onboard to create, produce and direct two videos for the label’s release schedule with Black Asteroid’s “Engine 1” and Tommy Four Seven’s “G”.
Blending these two art forms, Their live performances are often described as cinematic, emotional, dark and thought provoking. The Automatic Message has performed across North America at various events and festivals in Vancouver, Seattle, Portland, San Francisco, Montreal as well as Berlin’s infamous Berghain.

NANCY DRU (Subversive,

Jen P grew up in a large suburb of Vancouver, listening her dad’s strange records, playing goofy melodies on her bontempi, trying to learn guitar but finding reel to reel loops much more appealing. As a result, she has always been obsessed with the stranger end of electronic music.

In 1997 she started online radio stations geekmusic and geekmusic 2, playing IDM of the golden era. She also began producing her own IDM music at this time as The Square Root of Evil, and now has numerous releases under her belt, including two EPs, “Chirping Data” and “Killerbytes”. As well, she has played countless live shows around the world as a producer, including festivals such as Soundwave, Mutek, and Communikey, and alongside such artists as Plaid, Venetian Snares, Books on Tape, FFF, Cursor Miner, and Captain Ahab.

Tastes change, helped by a healthy dose of music festivals such as New Forms, Decibel and Mutek. Gradually Jen found herself enjoying the four on the floor sounds that she had previously brushed off (the 303s didn’t hurt either). In 2011 she helped to start an idm/techno bi-weekly in Vancouver- “”- as a resident DJ, using her experience as a producer to craft danceable sets with some less predictable twists and turns. In 2013 she became part of Vancouver Subversive crew, and has shared the stage with Alland Byallo (Thoughtless), Ryan Elliot (Osgut Ton), Shed (Monkeytown, Delsin), Kangding Ray (Raster Noton, Stroboscopic Artefacts), and Rodhad(Dystopian,Token)- playing deep & dark techno sounds that appeal to the brain as well as the body.

Subversive Presents:

Rødhåd (Dystopian, Token, Semantica – Berlin)
Nancy Dru
Austin Phillips

Open Studios
252 East 1st Avenue
doors @ 10pm

Tickets $20 (in advance)

Rødhåd has been socialized by Berlin’s looptechno nights and always finds the perfect balance of timeless techno to lift the dancefloor higher and higher. His style is always deep, powerful and melancholic – from dub to techno and back to house.

At the the end of the 1990s Rødhåd laid the groundwork for his DJ-career. He organised small open-air-parties in the outskirts of Berlin just for the fun of it. The word spread quickly far beyond Berlin’s and Germany’s borders about the new kid on the block. His specific style, consisting of Dub-Techno mixed with percussive grooves and his timeless, perfect mixing technique garnered him widespread recognition.

In 2009, he launched his own regular club night with himself as resident: DYSTOPIAN. Such legendary locations as the Arena Club, the Tape Club or Horst Krzbrg in Berlin have been witness to these intense club nights.

Around 2010, the famous Berlin club Berghain recognised Rødhåds craft. His sound and his style of mixing fit neatly to the philosophy of this place, and he started DJing there regularly. From then on he had gigs in places all over Europe, such as Trouw (Amsterdam), Concrete (Paris), Rex (Paris), Lux (Lisbon), Fuse (Brussels) and major scene events such as Awakenings, Weather Festival or Melt Festival.

In 2012, he released his first record on his label DYSTOPIAN. Rødhåd’s tracks immediately received praise by Robert Hood, Jeff Mills, Marcel Dettmann, Ben Klock, Luke Slater, Laurent Garnier, Sven Väth, Dave Clarke. Also labels such as Token, CLR & Cocoon became aware of the young producer.

He caught his big break in the same year, as he was featured and interviewed as “Break Through Artist Of The Year” on the paramount website for electronic music, Tours in Japan, Australia and international bookings every weekend followed.

Subversive is very excited to host Rodhad’s Vancouver debut. We know you will DANCE!

A souvenir of Nancy Dru’s incredible set from that night
