Subversive Presents: Mike Parker!

On Saturday May 26, 2012
Subversive is proud to bring Mike Parker to Vancouver!

Do. Not. Miss!
deep in the underground… in the cavernous basement of the old Woodward’s department store…the sounds of dark, groovy, ethereal techno will boom, rattle, and pulse as Subversive and W2 bring you a night of incomparable music, and vibes.

MIKE PARKER (Geophone, Dozzy Records, Labyrinth)

Self proclaimed noise maker, artist, fine arts university prof, and first and foremost electronic music producer, Mike Parker has cultivated one of the most distinguishable sounds in techno to date.

Parker combines his quiet obsession with analogue experimentation, fascination of ring modulators and love of the atonal and dissonant, to create a signature and patented sound often recognisable from the first bar. Over the years, his education in the visual arts has had a profound impact on the music he produces. His production style is as uncompromising as his dj sets are powerful: a track is rehearsed many times, then recorded live on mostly analogue gear with no edits or overdubbing later. His dj sets have the same spontaneous bite. Recent releases include a remix of classic Aubrey for MOWAR and a track on SPECTRAL SOUND, also included on Ryan Elliot’s recent “Document’ compilation.

Working from the relative obscurity of his Buffalo, New York Studio… Mike Parker’s incredible skills and unique take on the techno genre have NOT gone unnoticed… from Japan to Europe… techno afficianado’s ears have been perking up at his distinctive sound. This spring alone has seen him grace the decks of such legendary clubs as Le Batofar (Paris) Moog (Barcelona) and Berghain (Berlin)

The Subversive Crew is STOKED for this event and KNOW you will love the sounds of Mike Parker!

LYNDSY BROW (A.K.A. Miss Myte) (Subversive, Aspect Media)

Miss Myte has become a name synonymous with quality underground house and techno. Hunsberger and DVS1. We love what (and how) Lyndsy plays music… we bet your feet and booty will too!

AUSTIN PHILLIPS (Subversive, Deep UnderG)

The audible emotion that Austin creates behind the decks and the clever creations he devises in his studio reflect his inner musical guru. Setting the soundscape of many of Subversive’s events…playing alongside such greats as DVS1, Peter Van Hoesen, and Eddie Richards… Vancouver’s underground has come to love Austin… because… well… Austin knows his shit! If you do too… and love to dance.. you must check! ; )

CALEB FOX (Subversive, Black Knights)

Caleb Fox plays dope music. You may have been lucky enough to catch him behind the decks deep in the Vancouver underground. If so, you will have heard his mad skillz and exquisite selections. If not… this is your chance! Come early. Have a beverage, and dance like you own the floor!

For those who experienced the amazing sounds of DVS1 last year (Subversive room at the W2 moving party) and couldn’t get enough… and for those who just heard about it and felt the pangs of regret…

Subversive is very pleased to announce the return of one very busy DVS1 to our fair city! March 24, 2012 @ Open Studios! Do NOT miss the return of what LWE described as “an unrelenting… treat for a city that doesn’t usually get this kind of rising star techno experience.”

Zak aka DVS1 (devious one) is one of the most prominent figures in the Midwest /US dance music landscape today. A local favorite since the mid nineties…DVS1 continues to move dancefloors with a combination of deep musical knowledge, unparallelled enthusiasm, and a vinyl collection of more than 10,000 records.

Zak’s deep roots and his bold and uncompromising nature have won him great respect as a passionate defender and promoter (HUSH) of quality music. Zak began DJing in New York in the early nineties, focusing on the acid sounds of that time. After relocating to Minneapolis in the mid 90′s his style evolved, like that of techno itself, into something more complex, something deeper and more rhythmic. Today DVS1′s schedule takes him across planet earth. We are very very happy to have him stop in our corner again!

Some of Vancouver finest underground DJ’s are rounding out the night playing their Tribute to TJ Hooker…
Scott W., Austin Phillips, and MITIM.

Tickets $20 in advance at Beatstreet, Puff and Clubzone.com (more at the door) In honour of Tom’s memory all net proceeds of this event will be going to:

TJ Hooker – Not from Earth

hookertits

We rarely see any studio mixes from Mr. Hooker these days, so when he gives us a new one, and says its “all vinyl” and made on his rotary mixer, we get very exited, not to mention his selection tend to be quiet out of left field and personal when in the studio.

Sounds and selections Tom chose for this one can be described as raw, gritty, stripped down, spacey techno; hense the title, “not from earth”. Definitely our favorite hooker mix to date, this basement techno sound is big in places like Berghain, its nice to see one of our locals bringin it to Vancouver.

enjoy

Big thanks to all the W2 staff, SHAH DJ’s and all the other crews involved in making this happen.

Subversive Presents: DVS1 (Hush/Prologue/Klockworks/Transmat )

DVS1

Subversive has looked into the depths of the realm of underground techno, and are proud to bring you a very special artist. For those of you who like your sounds stripped down, raw, gritty, dark, druggy and twisted, DVS1 is going to melt your grey matter!

DVS1 (Prologue/ Transmat – Klockworks / Minneapolis, Minnesota)

TJ Hooker (Subversive / Black Knights )
Miss Myte ( Aspect Media)
Caleb Fox (Subversive / Black Knights )

DVS1 is one of the most prominent figures in the Midwest/US dance music landscape today. A Twin Cities DJ favourite since the mid nineties, he continues to move floors with a combination of deep musical knowledge, unparalleled enthusiasm, and a vinyl collection of more than 10,000 records. Headlining at such renown clubs as Fabric and Berghain… they’ve sat up and taken notice in London and Berlin. We’ve taken notice and been inspired out here on the wet coast too… and we KNOW you will be moved by DVS1′s incredible selections and be amazed by his skills.

This is sure to be an unforgettable night of mindblowing beats!

DVS1 delivered his first original production in late 2009, on Ben Klock’s Klockworks label, which placed him immediately on a global stage, receiving widespread acclaim from his peers. In the early months of 2010 he followed this up with an EP on Derrick May’s legendary Transmat label, an indicator of the level of quality that he has now established after only two releases. Further music is slated for release on Luke Slater’s Mote Evolver label, Perc Trax, Synewave and a further offering for Klockworks will cement his position among electronic music tastemakers.

As a producer, DVS1 makes music that is simple, effective and captures the feeling of the moment. As a DJ, he is a consummate performer, never mapping out his sets ahead of time, but always opting to craft sets spontaneously within the context of the moment. Often choosing to bring more than one bag of vinyl to each performance, each of his sets is a one-of-a-kind personal expression, never again to be repeated.

Musically, his style has evolved from initial inspirations of the acid sounds of the early 90’s scene in New York, into something deeper and more complex, following a migration to Minneapolis in later years. Since then, he has branched out into a wide variety of sounds – from hard and fast, to deep and hypnotic, to slow and soulful. Rather than giving limiting names to the genres he plays, he describes the music as beats, rhythms, textures, and colors. His philosophy is that the genre distinctions themselves aren’t important – only the emotional content of the music. This focus is readily apparent in the way he moves crowds, both literally and figuratively.

DVS1’s deep roots and his bold and uncompromising nature have won him great respect as a passionate and outspoken defender and promoter of quality music. Choosing to paint coherent, evocative, and powerful moods always appropriate for the time and place he is playing, he has not yet even begun to reach his full potential. With a truly unique approach to techno, DVS1 is a huge talent in the making.
